Friends Program

The Fun FRIENDS program focuses on increasing social-emotional skills, coping skills, and resilience to prevent the onset of emotional and behavioural problems in later life. Children, parents, and teachers are taught the intervention skills with the aim of promoting wellness and providing children and families with the skills needed to conquer challenges and adversity.

Why are we using this program?

What we find in education today is that students are increasingly unable to deal with the pressures of life.  For whatever reason tools for dealing with anxiety and pressure are lacking and life seems to overwhelm our students.  Some experts tell us it is due to increased pressure in expectations with curriculum, knowledge overload, communication overload, technology overload, society pressures etc.  Our hope in using the program once a week through the next 3 years is to give tools for students to deal with expectations put upon them in their life.  Student pressures are not decreasing, they are increasing, education is not the same as it was 15 years ago.  Our hope here is to build resiliency.

What will be done with the surveys once they are all collected?

The information is gathered without student names and will be recorded as data per question and age.  The surveys will be destroyed afterwards.  This will be done at RVS head office.

Is this program being implemented internally or will any third party company be involved?

This program has been designed for schools and is implemented by homeroom teachers.  This is for our students to develop tools on how to handle stress and anxiety in their life.  Every teacher has gone through training on how to deliver this program in their classrooms.

Why do we need data?

Questions by their very nature may seem personal depending on how you feel about what is being asked.  To provide context for that, if I am afraid of spiders and asked a question about my fear, it will seem personal.  If I am not afraid of spiders it will not seem personal to me.  This is why all documents are kept confidential.  We know in education that quantitative data is important if we are to continue to use any program.  Data provides valuable evidence to further enhance support mechanisms for our students.

What if my child does not want to talk in class about their anxiety?

Our goal is not to create more anxiety, students can certainly opt out in answering questions.  We call this a "pass" when called upon in sharing sessions.

When a school uses culture programs such as this, often the activities will ask students to share about their lives, encourage each other, and talk about struggles they may or may not be facing.  This program is not a counseling program. This is a school based culture initiative aimed at providing students with tools for a successful life.  Sometimes students may choose not to talk, but to observe and reflect on classroom discussions.  Some students will react to what is said in class with distaste, others with apathy, and others in agreement.  With any of these reactions it is a great starting point for discussions at home.  Every Friday is our homeroom period for the sessions; you can plan to talk to your child about their "take away" each week.  Keep in mind it is about the discussion, asking questions simply reveals thoughts and emotions that are already present.  Helping our children understand and learn how to interpret and deal with emotions is the journey.

Are these types of program new to RVS?

No, programs like this have been used for years.  Safe and Caring initiatives are part of our school mandate.  All of them support various aspects of student growth and development and this one is no different.

How can we know the curriculum?

This site has the curriculum for each division level.  We will also be sending home newsletter information every month on the topics.  This is a wonderful way for you to enter into conversations with your child about life issues.
