Basic Woodworking

Grade 7/8 Course Outline



Reason for CTS: This CTS course offers all students important learning opportunities in the field of woodworking. The program offered here is a basic level and is a requirement for future levels. It is geared for maximum student knowledge in planning, materials, tools, work habits, safety, and the field of woodworking as a whole.

Course Set-up: Each student MUST complete 1 or 2 of the following projects in order to earn credit for the course

Basic Woodworking - Grade 7/8

-Projects for grade 7 include the following: puzzles, plant boxes, cookbook holders, beginning intarsia, etc.

-Projects for grade 8 include the following: intermediate intarsia, more footstools, book shelves and other such small furniture items.

***NOTE****   Both grade 7's and 8's are encouraged to bring in their own ideas for projects, after the first project is done. However, it is up to the teacher to decide whether it is appropriate for the time allotted, skill level, and school guidelines.


General Information

1. Each module will involve approximately 24 hours of  instruction, theory and practical aspects, as well as unit tests.    

2. Extra hours may be available to complete an assignment or work on any project in order to finish it.

3. Students who fail to come to class prepared to work will be expected to leave the class.

4. ABSENCES will hurt your grade as you may be unable to complete the unit and thus receive the credit.

5. Inappropriate behaviour in class will result in you being asked to leave.

Clean-Up

1. The last 5-10 minutes of class each day will be used for clean up

2. NO ONE leaves until clean up is complete.

3. Clean up your immediate work space first, then your assign space.

4. All tools will be put away properly.

5. All machines will be clean off.

6. Supplies such as paint, fasteners, etc. will be put in their proper place.

7. Clear off all benches of garbage, dust, and other such materials.

8. All safety equipment must be hung up in their proper places.

9. The shop must be swept at the end of every class.

10. All scrap wood to be placed in the appropriate place - garbage or scrap bin.



EVALUATION

Each project will be marked by both the student and the teacher to better judge the quality of work produced. Areas include – quality of the work, accuracy, use of tools and equipment, and safety. Rubic is posted in class. Along with the project, various quizzes and tests will be taken on subjects like measurement and equipment safety.


Students Fees

1. All glue, nails, screws and equipment will be provided by the school.

2. The cost of wood for the projects will be the responsibility of the student. Cost for projects varies between free up to about $30 depending on size and amount of wood required.


Equipment Needed at all Times:

All students are required to have a pencil, notebook and two paint brushes (1 small for detail and 1 large for background/base). These items will not be supplied by the teacher at any time!

Course Set-up: Each student MUST complete 2 of the following projects in order to earn credit for the course: senior intarsias, more complicated footstools, book shelves and other such small furniture items. These projects are based primarily on skill level and time for completion.
