Reason for CTS:  This CTS course offers all students important learning opportunities in the field of construction. This modularized program offered here is an introductory level and is a requirement for future levels. It is geared for maximum student knowledge in planning, materials, tools, work habits, safety, and the field of            construction as a whole.

 

Course Set-up: Each student MUST complete 3 or 5 of the following modules in order to earn a  total of 3 or 5 credits.

Construction Modules - Introductory Level - Grade 10

 

CON 1010                  1. Introduction to Construction

- basic tool and production skills

- general woods project

- 22hours                                                                    1 Credit

 

CON 1120                   2. Project Planning and Management

- drawing up and planning a basic project layout

- multiple part product with joints

- 22 hours                                                                    1 Credit

 

CON 1130                   3. Solid Construction

- work with various joints and solid materials

- create a piece of furniture to take home

- 22 hours                                                                    1 Credit

 

CON 1140                   4. Wood Turning

- learn about the lathe and its' tools

- create a turned project

- 22 hours                                                                    1 Credit

 

CON 1160                   5. Manufactured Materials Construction

-  work with man made materials

- create project

- 22 hours                                                                    1 Credit

 

General Information

 

1. Each module will involve approximately 22 hours of  instruction, theory and practical aspects, as well as unit tests.

 

2. Extra hours may be available so that you may complete an assignment or work on any project in order to finish it.

 

3. Students who fail to come to class prepared to work will be expected to leave the class.

 

4. ABSENCES will hurt your grade as you may be unable to complete the unit and thus receive the credit.

 

5. Inappropriate behaviour in class will result in you being asked to leave.

 

 

Clean-Up

 

1. The last 5-10 minutes of class each day will be used for clean up

 

2. NO ONE leaves until clean up is complete.

 

3. Clean up your immediate work space first, then your assign space.

 

4. All tools will be put away properly.

 

5. All machines will be clean off.

 

6. Supplies such as paint, fasteners, etc. will be put in their proper place.

 

7. Clear off all benches of garbage, dust, and other such materials.

 

8. All safety equipment must be hung up in their proper places.

 

9. The shop must be swept at the end of every class.

 

10. All scrap wood to be placed in the appropriate place - garbage or scrap bin.

 

 

EVALUATION

 

Note: Each module has its' own criteria , as well as common criteria for all modules, for the evaluation marks. Student self assessment and well as some teacher input will determine the grade.

 

Students Fees

 

1. All consumables such as glue, nails, screws, generic paints and use of equipment will be covered by school fees.

 

2. The cost of materials - wood, hardware and specialty paint will be the responsibility of the student. Projects like: small - bowls can be from $5.00 - $30.00, medium - coffee tables - $80-100, and large - tresle dining table - $300.00.

 

 

 

Equipment Needed at all Times:

 

All students are required to have a pencil and two paint brushes (1 small for detail and 1 large for background/base). These items will not be supplied by the teacher at any time!
